This article presents a section of a doctoral research study that analyzes the understandings expressed by Early Childhood Education teachers regarding the development of oral language and its implications for pedagogical intentionality. Grounded in the Historical-Cultural perspective, the study is based on the understanding of language as a higher psychological function and as a mediator of human development, which requires the intentional organization of pedagogical interactions in the context of Early Childhood Education. This is a qualitative research study of an interpretative nature, conducted with thirteen teachers who teach in Maternal I and II classes across four institutions of the municipal Early Childhood Education network in Oeste Potiguar (RN, Brazil). Data were produced through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Content Analysis. The analysis made it possible to identify five teacher understandings regarding the development of oral language: indicator of intellectual development; social and cultural product; object of intentional pedagogical intervention; affectivity as a facilitator of orality; and a process whose comprehension precedes verbalization. These understandings coexist in a non-homogeneous manner, at times approaching mediational perspectives and at other times reproducing spontaneous-developmental logics. It is concluded that pedagogical intentionality is grounded in conceptual assumptions and becomes materialized in didactic-pedagogical decisions related to language practices, highlighting the need for deeper theoretical grounding and for formative processes that articulate pedagogical conceptions and practice in Early Childhood Education. The study contributes by offering an analytical framework of teachers’ understandings that may support continuing education policies and curricular restructuring in Pedagogy programs.
