Abstract

The present article discusses Popular Education and its theoretical-methodological configurations, its representations in Latin America, and its importance for the construction of a distinct Southern epistemology that aligns with the historical struggles of various social movements resisting the exclusionary model of neocolonial exploitation. We begin with the presentations and debates held in the course Rural Education and Education in the Countryside in Latin America, within the PECC MS NETWORK, during the first semester of 2024, as the result of collaborative work among professors and researchers from several Latin American countries. In this context, Popular Education—understood as a field of critical social thought built within specific historical and pedagogical processes—emerges and is continually reformulated through dialogue with the contexts of resistance present across Latin American nations. Consequently, the field of Popular Education prioritizes the construction of Latin American sociocultural identities, territorial and democratic achievements and resistances, opposition to colonial and neocolonial matrices, and the struggle for a critical education capable of breaking with Eurocentric and North-American paradigms and frameworks. We therefore start from guiding questions that support our understanding of the formation of the Latin American paradigm of Popular Education: What do we mean by Popular Education? Which perspective of Popular Education provides the foundations to think and enact a critical education in Latin America? To support our discussions, we draw on authors such as Jara (2018), Freire (2011), Carrillo (2011), Brandão (2006), among others. Our analyses highlight the importance of Popular Education as an epistemological paradigm unique to Latin America and as a fertile field of possibilities for a more just and democratic education.
