REPRESENTATIONS OF COLÉGIO PAES DE CARVALHO FOR SECONDARY EDUCATION IN PARÁ (1930 -1950)

Abstract

This article deals with the representations of Colégio Paes de Carvalho in the context of public education in Pará between the 1930s and 1950s, seeking to understand the reasons that led this educational institution to achieve the status of a model of secondary education due to its national equivalence. In this sense, the general objective is to analyze the representations of the referred institution in the local context through legal devices, which regulated the functioning of the school in the time frame in question. The methodological process is constituted as documentary, having as sources the decrees published in the Official Gazette of the state of Pará referring to the internal regulations of the institution, the messages of governors related to the actions of the state power in the educational area and also, the documents of the school it self that informed about the activities carried out in that space. The analytical basis was constructed based on authors such as Roger Chartier (1990; 2011), Souza (2013), Damasceno (2012; 2015), Faria Filho (1998; 2007), França and Alves (2020), among others who collaborated respectively to understand the debates on representations and the situation in Pará during the period investigated. The data revealed that the practices of the aforementioned educational institution gave it a prominent place in the context of local education, being considered by society as a symbol of progress, education, civility and nationalism.
