Abstract

From the genealogical method, which understands the discourses under analysis as concrete devices of counterfeiting that induce specific political practices and behaviors, popular interests are contradicted by the discourse of the "left of the order" during the period of redemocratization. Simultaneously, there is a rise in fundamentalist religiosity, which contributes to the growth of conservative positions within Brazilian society. Focusing on the period between 1964 and 2022, the hypothesis that class conciliation was the driving force behind the redemocratization process is scrutinized through informative references found in newspapers of the time, as well as in articles and party proposals. This examination reveals how the strategic limits of intervention in class conflicts and social reforms after the military dictatorship were shaped within political groups in agreement, ultimately reinforcing traditional moral values. In this article, we aim to recover part of the events and past historical conditions that, throughout social struggles, cemented a conservative political position among segments of the Brazilian population and the left, through historical, sociological, and political reflection. We also seek to infer the reasons behind the shift to the extreme right and the contemporary bipolarity of Brazilian institutional politics.
