Author Guidelines

Authorship Criteria

Individuals designated as authors must have made a substantial contribution to the development of the manuscript. REUFPI adopts authorship criteria as per the Uniform Disclosure Form for Potential Conflicts of Interest (ICMJE), which include: a) substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; b) acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data; c) drafting the article or critically revising it; d) final approval of the version to be published. The maximum number of authors is seven. Exceptionally, for multicenter studies, the inclusion of additional authors will be considered based on the relevance of the justification. Co-authors who do not meet these criteria should not be included.

A REUFPI não aceita mais de dois artigos publicados por edição da revista.

Submission Procedures

The corresponding author must gather all necessary documentation (checklist) and follow these steps:

STEP 1 (Start)
  • Choose the appropriate section for submission. For more information, click here;
  • Submission language (Portuguese, Spanish, or English);
  • Comments to the editor (Cover letter) – a letter to the Editor must be presented, justifying the importance of the manuscript for publication in REUFPI, highlighting the contribution of the results to knowledge advancement and applicability in practice;
STEP 2 (Manuscript upload)
STEP 3 (Metadata inclusion)

Completing the metadata is mandatory; without it, the manuscript cannot proceed to the first review stage. All requested information must be accurately filled out:

  • Author(s): Full names (no abbreviations), email, ORCiD, Lattes URL, institution/affiliation, country, biography (highest academic degree and institutional affiliation);
  • Title: up to 15 words, in the manuscript’s language (do not use all caps);
  • Abstract: up to 200 words in the manuscript’s language. It must be structured as follows: Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusion;
  • three to five keywords in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. Portuguese and Spanish keywords must be drawn from DECS (http://decs.bvs.br/), and English keywords from MeSH (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/meshhome.html);
  • Contributors and funding agencies: Optional acknowledgment of contributors who are not listed as authors. In the case of funding, authors must cite the supporting agency;
  • References: must follow Vancouver Style as outlined by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE): www.icmje.org.
STEP 4 (Upload of supplementary documents)
  • Title page (Template)
  • o Declaration of Responsibility and Copyright Transfer, signed by all authors and addressed to the Editor-in-Chief (Template)
  • o Research involving human subjects in Brazil must present documentation of approval by the Research Ethics Committee and/or CONEP, in accordance with Resolution CNS No. 466/2012, when applicable.
STEP 5 (Submission confirmation)

At this stage, the author must review all uploaded documents and finalize the submission.

Manuscript Presentation

REUFPI recommends that manuscripts follow the detailed guidelines below:

Manuscript Preparation

Manuscripts must be typed using Microsoft Word with the following page setup: A4 size, 2.5 cm margins, Times New Roman font, size 12, 1.5 line spacing throughout the text, and page numbers at the top right.

The manuscript should begin with the title (centered, up to 15 words, not in all caps), followed by the abstract (up to 200 words, structured into Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusion). Both the title and abstract must be written only in the language of the manuscript.

Keywords should follow the abstract (three to five) in Portuguese (Descritores), English (Descriptors), and Spanish (Descriptores). Portuguese and Spanish terms must come from DECS, and English terms from MeSH.

The manuscript should include the following sections in continuous format: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, and References. Exceptions are made for Reflection papers and Letters to the Editor.

In Reflection studies, sections should include: Introduction, Methods, Results and Discussion (with appropriate adaptations as needed by authors), Conclusion, and References.

Introduction: Clearly state the topic, relevant concepts, justification, knowledge gaps, and end with the study objective

Methods: Provide a complete description of the methodology, including study type, setting, population/sample, inclusion/exclusion criteria, data collection instrument (including validity and reliability), selected variables, data collection and analysis techniques (including statistical methods), and ethical procedures (include ethics approval number or equivalent from the country of origin).

Results: Limit to presenting findings, without interpretation or commentary. May include up to five illustrations (tables, graphs, figures, photographs) inserted in the text.

Discussion: Separate from results, should focus on data obtained, discussing them in light of national and international literature, highlighting new or significant aspects, and identifying study limitations and contributions.

Conclusion: A clear, concise statement that answers the objective, grounded in the results and consistent with the title and methods.

Citation Format

  • Indirect citations should use a numeric system according to the order cited, without author names. Citation numbers should be in superscript and in parentheses after the period (e.g., (1-4), (1-2,4)).
  • Direct quotations must be in the body text, in quotation marks, including reference number and page (e.g., (1:30-31)).
  • Testimonials should appear in font size 11, single-spaced, without italics or quotation marks, indented 2 cm, and identified using coded labels in parentheses. Omissions must be indicated by ellipses in brackets.

Illustrations (tables, graphs, figures) must not exceed five per manuscript, be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals, and appear in the order cited. Each must include a title with location, state acronym, country, and year of data collection, using lowercase letters and single spacing. If not created by the authors, the source must be indicated.

References should appear at the end of the manuscript, include only those cited in the text, and follow Vancouver Style, as recommended by ICMJE (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html). Journals should be abbreviated according to the NLM Catalog (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog/journals) or BVS (http://portal.revistas.bvs.br/). Authors must ensure:

Recomenda-se que autores considerem as seguintes exigências:

  • At least 50% of references are from the last 5 years, and 30% from the last 2 years;
  • At least 30% of references are from articles indexed in international databases;
  • At least two references from REUFPI;
  • References must be relevant and fully consulted by the authors;
  • References should be in English when available;
  • Avoid grey literature (official documents, theses, books, legislation, etc.), unless essential;
  • REUFPI encourages citations with DOI;
