Abstract

This article discusses the capabilities of process tracing in producing valid causal explanations. In this sense, the present paper collaborates with the discussions on Research Methodology, specifically in the areas of Political Science and International Relations. It addresses the aforementioned purposes by observing the following points: a) the characteristics and potential of process tracing in research design; b) their potential for producing valid causal inferences; and c) the empirical tests that allow greater inferential leverage through process tracking. In conclusion, it is observed that this method has robust capacities to help researchers during their researches in the field of Social Science and International Relations.
