This article aims to analyze the emergence and expansion of historically black universities, the so-called HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), with special attention to those located in the Deep South of the United States. Methodologically, the article maps historically black colleges and universities in the United States in the bibliography produced on the subject. It then addresses the importance of understanding the educational experience of the Afro-descendant population in the United States, in order to establish a reflection on the meanings of belonging to an exclusively ethnic institution. Finally, the article seeks to indicate the relevance of studying the subject for the field of history of education and conceives HBCUs.
