Abstract

The rapid urbanization of cities has generated challenges for the efficient management of stormwater runoff. Conventional pavements, by making the soil impermeable, contribute to flooding, inundations, and damage to urban infrastructure. These events result in economic losses and compromise the population’s quality of life, while also affecting the regular functioning of cities. This study analyzes the effectiveness of permeable pavements as a sustainable alternative to mitigate such problems, focusing on the city of Teresina, Piauí, Brazil. The research used the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) software to simulate the hydrological behavior of a residential subdivision, comparing scenarios with and without permeable pavements. The results show that adopting this technology can reduce the total runoff volume by about 24.00%, decrease peak flow by approximately 57.00%, and increase the system’s response time by up to 7 minutes. In addition, permeable pavements enhance water infiltration into the soil, contributing to groundwater recharge. The study highlights the relevance of permeable pavements as a sustainable solution, promoting more efficient urban drainage and helping to reduce flooding in Teresina.
