This article seeks to analyze the mixed moral theory proposed by Denis Coitinho, arguing that it implies a type of moderate perfectionism, but which is liberal, compatible with the fact of pluralism and normatively vigorous. Initially, a reconstruction of the main aspects of mixed moral theory will be made. Afterwards, the type of perfectionism implied by it will be shown and some objections to this position will be refuted. Finally, it will be argued that mixed moral theory or contractualist theory of virtues remains fully liberal, but presents a normative vigor that is more capable of responding to some challenges of contemporary liberal democracies.
