Abstract

Extreme events correspond to changes in the atmospheric elements of a location. Natural disasters related to these events involves their occurrence in spaces, the historical process of human occupation of these areas, the level of preparation and the response capacity that social groups have. In this sense, this article aims an actual literature review focus on natural disasters that occurred in urban areas of Brazil, resulting from extreme weather events.Therefore, this review was based on involving hydro-meteorological disasters in Brazil and the data shows the damages and losses, over the years, resulting a significant growth  in the number of cases  from the action of extreme events, in recent decades. This fact is la consequence of a historical process of disorderly urban growth and the absence of public policies associated with disasters. The episodes of drought and dry climates, floods and inundation are the events that caused the greatest damage to cities in recent decades. This work highlights the need to apply a disaster prevention system in the most affected Brazilian municipalities
