The rural is produced from various land uses in which land or “natural space” appears as a primary factor, which has often resulted in the creation and recreation of social forms. This article aims to analyze the rural, through the methodological procedure bibliographical research. To achieve this objective, the Web of Science, ScienceDirect, Taylor & Francis Group, CAPES, IBGE databases were used, among other articles and books in the period between 2000 and 2019. In this context, the articles were read, carefully selected and grouped into five categories: a) concept of the rural; b) Rural and urban relationship in the context of new ruralities; c) Classification and characterization of rural and urban spaces in Brazil; d) Geotechnologies to support the rural territories model. National and international works were selected, cataloged and analyzed. Although there are several conceptions about the rural, it is understood that there is space for the development of new studies dealing with this theme, fostering new knowledge and subsidizing decision makers. This work contributed methodologically to the topic under study, through the use of the Systematic Bibliographic Review (RBS), as well as to the scientific debate on the theme of new ruralities and territorial planning, especially when using geotechnologies for mapping sustainable rural territories. In light of the discussions, it is clear that today, the urban space and the rural space make great exchanges, including population, ideas, inputs, goods, capital, goods and waste, but they also present characteristic elements of themselves within the other and this does not it makes its essence, that is, its rurality or urbanity, lost. And geotechnologies contribute towards characterizing the spatial distribution of the component elements of rural areas in order to enable the planner to have a social organization capable of perceiving the new dynamics of the rural and the relationship that this creates with large cities.
