Abstract

The main objective of the article is to analyze the development of primary education in Piauí in the 1930s and 1940s as a project to achieve the State’s progress. In the 19th century, there was already the idea that education should be an area of public action, being a basis for the modernization of Brazil, however, only in the 1920s, a more propitious space for these discussions was installed, and in the 1930s and 1940s, this idea acquired greater impulse in the states through centralizing initiatives by the Federal Government. From the analysis of official and hemerographic primary sources, linked to aspects related to modernizations (BERMAN, 2010) and the welfare State (ESPING-ANDERSEN, 1990), it was identified that the measures had repercussions in Piauí causing a considerable development of education, that ocurred in the midst of a problematic implementation, notably restricted to primary school, and also more restricted to the capital, which has become a model for the municipalities of the State.
