Abstract

This article aims to map elements of influence of the neoinstitutionalist perspective of Douglass North in important aspects of the analysis of regional development. For this, it is organized in two sessions. The first presents a brief summary of the genesis and evolution of this author's theory of institutions, highlighting its main analytical elements. The second identifies in three important theoretical blocks for the analysis of regional development (Social Capital Theory, Endogenous Development Theory and Neo-Schumpeterian School) the role of institutions and, in this context, the influence exercised by North's theory. In conclusion, it emphasizes that the perspectives studied incorporated institutions as a determining explanatory element for the dynamics of regional development, fully demonstrating the influence of studies developed by New Institutional Economics, in particular by Douglass North.
