Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the utilization of Twitter in the electoral campaigns of the twenty-six Brazilian capitals during the first round of the 2020 municipal elections. The analyzed data were collected throughout the campaign for the first round of the 2020 elections using the Netlytic software and an algorithm developed in the R programming language. To achieve the research objective, descriptive statistical analysis, cluster analysis, and inferential statistical analysis were employed. The findings revealed that, in general, leftist candidates utilized Twitter more extensively and successfully engaged with their online support base. Moreover, the Southeast and South regions emerged as the primary sources of the tweeted content.
