Abstract

The text aims to problematize recent experiences with “social currency” based on the cases of municipalities in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Although the origin of social currencies in Brazil dates back to the late 1990s, in the recent context of the health crisis, there has been an increase in the interest of city governments in creating social currencies to implement monetary transfer policies and productive inclusion. The text is result of ongoing research and results from a bibliographical review and documental research. It appears that in the context of the capital crisis, exacerbated by health crisis, the use of “social currency” as a public policy works to deepen the financialization of social policies, particularly Social Assistance, combined with new forms of workforce management, but under the legitimization of the local development discourse, “solidarity finance”, entrepreneurship, self-management and the fight against poverty.
