Abstract

This paper investigates the concept of communication by Karl Jaspers and its resonance by Hannah Arendt based on a pedagogical relationship between them and its unfolding into a lifelong friendship. To this, it will be necessary to analyze the two different moments in work of Jaspers and the subsequent active resonance of these considerations in the thought of Arendt. These are: 1) the section about communication in the second volume of his Philosophy (Second volume: Enlightenment of Existence, 1932) where there is a direct relation between communication and existence, and 2) the idea of unlimited communication present in Origin and goal of History, published in 1949. We intend to show how the Enlightenment of Existence reveals itself in Arendtian works that deal with vita activa and deal directly with public space as a place of plurality, appearance, and discourse, as well as the final works of the author's life that deal with vita contemplativa, as is the specific case of The Life of the Mind. Furthermore, we will try to show how the concept of communication present in Origin and goal of History and its cosmopolitanism is also important for the Arendtian considerations on the faculty of judging.
