Invertebrate fossil record from the Permo-Carboniferous sequence of the Parnaíba Basin
Abstract
The use of invertebrates to characterize terrestrial and marine environments through fossils is widely applied due to the close relationship between invertebrates and the environment in which they live. Thus, a bibliographic survey was carried out on the registration of fossil invertebrates, focusing on the Poti and Piauí (Carboniferous) and Pedra de Fogo (Permian) formations in the Parnaíba Basin. For the research, a portion was delimited in the permo-carboniferous interval, located in the region belonging to the State of Piauí, where a large amount of sedimentary rocks from the Paleozoic Era flourish. The study shows that the presence of the same group of invertebrates, the bivalves, for the three formations confirms the similarity that exists between the carboniferous fauna of the Poti and Piauí formations and those of the Permian of the Pedra de Fogo formation. This can be explained by the fact that in Piauí the work for these formations, despite growing, is still not enough, or because the sediments are reworked a lot or as a result of tectonic movements reaching marine sediments during these movements.
