Reduzir a população e o tamanho das nossas economias é necessário para compartilhar a Terra de forma justa com outras espécies e futuras gerações humanas

Biólogos da conservação concordam que a humanidade está prestes a causar uma extinção em massa e que sua principal força impulsionadora é nossa imensa e rapidamente crescente economia global. Estamos substituindo os dez milhões de espécies selvagens da Terra por mais de nós mesmos, nossas espécies domesticadas, nossos sistemas de apoio econômico e nosso lixo. Nesse processo, estamos criando um mundo mais monótono, domesticado e perigoso para nós mesmos. O argumento moral para reduzir os impactos humanos excessivos sobre a biosfera é forte tanto sob perspectivas antropocêntricas quanto biocêntricas. O sine qua non para isso é reduzir o número de humanos e o tamanho de nossas economias, paralelamente ao aumento da área global reservada para áreas protegidas. Devemos tomar essas medidas como parte de esforços abrangentes para criar sociedades justas e sustentáveis, nas quais tanto humanos quanto outras espécies possam prosperar.
